Deep hole drilling gun drill
maximum precision in small diameters and extreme depths
Gun drilling is one of TAES’s most advanced specialties, with proven and contrasted experience.
This process allows drilling both blind and through holes, in which the ratio between length and diameter is considerable, guaranteeing a straightness, concentricity and surface quality very difficult to achieve through other production processes.
Thanks to more than five decades of experience in deep hole drilling, our team masters all phases of the process.
Our gun drill type drilling machines are equipped with CNC systems and high-pressure internal cooling, which allows us to drill in a continuous cycle without reliefs and achieve optimal results in pieces up to 11 meters in length and 50 tons weight
Our extensive machinery park allows us to work on single pieces, medium and large series, having machines with 1, 2, 3 and 4 spindles.
The process
Deep Hole Gun drilling is based on a cutting tool of great length relative to the diameter, which through controlled cutting conditions and feeds, obtains dimensional and roughness results very difficult to obtain by other machining processes. For this, tools called gun drills are used, which have a specific geometry.
Another characteristic of this process is the high-pressure cooling through the interior of the tool, being essential for obtaining good chip and its evacuation, which is carried out through the tool itself.
At TAES, each project is custom designed, adjusting parameters such as cooling pressure, feed and rotation speed to obtain results with demanding dimensional tolerances and roughness.
This process is applied to both blind and through holes, with the possibility of drilling inclined holes.
Application sectors
Gun drilling is an essential technology in sectors where precision pieces are required.
- Aeronautics: Hydraulic and pneumatic systems, and landing gear, among others
- Automotive: Precision work on elements as diverse as pre-machined or finished shafts for the most diverse applications, camshafts, gearbox shafts, hollow shafts to be mounted on adjustable shock absorbers or shafts for steering racks, among others.
- Machinery construction: Gearbox shafts, reducer shafts, gears, spindles, headstock shafts, etc.
- Sporting weapons: Barrels and bolts
- Machining: All types of pieces and materials in which a hole of great depth relative to the diameter is necessary.
